Hours of Daytona: The big news about this weekend’s start of the 2019 big-league racing season with the Rolex 24 at Daytona is that Canadian sports car fans are going to be able to watch the race on television.

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), the organization that sanctions the 24-hour race at Daytona and the rest of the WeatherTech championship, including the 12 Hours of Sebring in March and the Mobil 1 Sports Car Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in July, announced on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement for all races on the 2019 schedule to be shown live on the Discovery-Velocity Channel and that a one-hour highlights show following each race would be broadcast by TSN.

Now, I could launch into a full-scale discussion about this. For instance, if TSN is going to televise a highlights show after the fact, why not show the races live? I mean, they do have five (count ‘em, five) channels. And Discovery-Velocity is not part of basic cable, which means you will have to pay extra for it. But I won’t go into a tirade because I’ve done that sort of thing before and it rarely does any good, so why bother?

Besides, at least the race is available. Auto racing is a niche sport and sports car racing is a niche within a niche so if we want it — and that means me and you — then we’re going to have to pay for it.

Meanwhile, come Saturday afternoon, I will be able to watch two Canadian teams and several Canadian drivers race in this iconic event and I would definitely spend money to do that. Scott Hargrove of Vancouver and Zach Robichon of Ottawa will be driving a 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 R in the GTD category for Pfaff Motorsports of Toronto and Newmarket and Andrew Bordin and the Willis brothers of Woodbridge — AIM Autosport — have partnered with IndyCar owners Jimmy Vasser and James (Sulli) Sullivan to form AIM Vasser Sullivan and will enter two Lexus RC F GT3 cars in the around-the-clock marathon.

AIM, Hargrove and Robichon will not be the only Canadians in action at Daytona this weekend. Daniel Morad and Devlin DeFrancesco, both of Toronto, will race in the Main Event while Multimatic Motorsports of Markham, Scott Maxwell of Toronto, Kenny Wilden of Oakville and Karl Thomson’s Toronto-based Compass Racing (Kuno Wittmer of Hudson, Que., aboard) all took part in Friday’s Michelin Pilot Challenge (previously, the Continental Tire Challenge).

So we are well represented, and will continue to be, all season. For instance, during the Discovery-Velocity telecasts, which were nailed down around Christmas, although the announcement didn’t come till this week, Pfaff Motorsports will be contributing not just on the racing surface but as a race show sponsor. I think that’s terrific and good for Pfaff, led by Chris Pfaff, an honourable member of the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame.

It is IMSA’s 50th year of operation this season and while I was in Detroit for the North American International Auto Show several weeks ago, I bumped into Scott Atherton, who is president and COO of the IMSA and the former president and CEO of the American Le Mans Series. We had time for a chat.

NORRIS McDONALD: You have solid teams, name drivers and a strong schedule, so it appears IMSA is in good shape. Is it?

SCOTT ATHERTON: We have had six solid years of growth that has been consistent and is sustainable. This is not a peaks and valleys sport like it’s been in the past. The sport of sports car racing has been famous for that for a long time, but I think the dynamics currently are very favourable to our product. It’s our opinion that the positioning we have with high-end production vehicles in our GT category, and the opportunity for manufacturers to race and show off the technology they have in our Prototype category, provides us with that relevance that gives sustainability the environment it needs to prevail
